Quick Summary: Bazbus Guides is where we publish long-form travel articles about South Africa. Every guide draws on 30 years of running the country’s original backpacker hop-on hop-off network, feedback from 180+ hostel partners, and verified sources like SANParks. This page explains what we cover, how we write it, and what standards you can expect.
Baz Bus Guides is the editorial arm of Baz Bus, the company that’s run South Africa’s backpacker hop-on hop-off network since 1995. We started publishing these guides because most travel writing about South Africa is either written by someone who visited once, or by a marketing team that has never actually sat on the N2 in a February thunderstorm. We wanted something different — research and advice that come from actually operating the route.
We’re not a blog. We’re the operator, publishing what we’ve learned across roughly 300,000 passengers and 2,000+ TripAdvisor reviews. Every article is checked against outside data — SANParks for park stats, South African Tourism for regional context — and published under the Baz Bus Editorial Team byline because it’s a team effort: drivers, operations staff, and editors all shape a guide before it goes live.
Every article follows the same steps:
We use a mix of first-hand operational knowledge and verified third-party data:
| Source | Examples | What We Use It For |
|---|---|---|
| Baz Bus operational data | 30 years of route logs, driver notes, feedback from 180+ hostel partners across 40+ towns | Travel times, seasonal advice, hostel recommendations |
| Official government sources | SANParks, provincial tourism boards | Park fees, entrance rules, wildlife statistics |
| Verified customer feedback | 2,000+ TripAdvisor reviews, post-trip surveys | Traveler quotes, satisfaction trends |
| Third-party operators | Rental companies, safari lodges, activity providers | Price benchmarking for comparisons |
When we quote prices, we give the actual figure for two travelers rather than a per-person marketing number — travel is rarely cheaper alone. When we quote park stats, we cite the source: for context, Kruger National Park spans roughly 19,485 km² and is home to nearly 150 mammal species, figures that shape every itinerary we recommend.
If a topic isn’t covered, tell us. A big share of our editorial calendar comes from reader questions.
We write in the first person plural — “we recommend,” “we’ve found” — because these guides are written by a team, not an anonymous freelancer. The same team answers reviews and WhatsApp messages, so the voice you read here is the voice you’ll get when you book.
We’re a commercial company, and these guides live on our website. Where our service genuinely fits, we say so — our Kruger safari guides include a $50 discount for Baz Bus passengers using code BBVSOFF50, and we don’t hide that. Two things we won’t do:
Here’s how one recent passenger described the experience:
“Baz bus made my South Africa experience as easy as possible. My plans changed a lot and it was easy to just adjust my itinerary online on the fly. It takes away the hassle of getting to and from bus stations and the chaos of transportation as a whole. Definitely worth the premium.” — Josh M., United States, March 2025.
Who writes these guides?
Every guide is published under the Baz Bus Editorial Team byline because they’re collaborative — drivers, operations staff, and editors all shape a draft before it goes live. We publish this way because our credibility comes from 30 years of running the route, not from a single freelancer’s trip.
How often are they updated?
We review every guide at least once a year and sooner if a major change happens — a route reopening, a park fee revision, or a safety-relevant update. The “Updated Data” line at the top of each article shows the most recent verified date.
Are these articles sponsored?
No. Our guides are written in-house, not by third parties paying for placement. We link to partners in our network of 180+ hostels and vetted operators, but recommendations come from operational experience, not paid promotion.
Do you ever recommend anything you don’t sell?
Yes, regularly. If a rental car makes more sense for a family in the Winelands, we say so. If Intercape is more efficient for someone who just needs to reach Johannesburg overnight, we point that out. A guide that only recommends our own service isn’t a guide — it’s a brochure.
Our guides reflect an operator perspective — we know the Garden Route, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, and Kruger deeply, but we’re less current on regions outside our active network, so cross-reference our informational content on the Wild Coast, KwaZulu-Natal, or the interior with dedicated local sources like South African Tourism. Prices are accurate as of the most recent update, but for anything you’re booking within the next 30 days, a quick WhatsApp message to our team is the fastest way to confirm a current figure.
