Quick Summary: Yes, and there are two separate deadlines people conflate. Buying the pass is the flexible part — you have twelve months from purchase to start travelling. Reserving each individual leg is the part with real deadlines: reservations should be made at least three days before departure to guarantee a seat, and changes need to be in before the cut-off or a fee can apply. This guide sets out both timelines by season, explains what happens if you miss a bus, and flags the constraint that actually derails itineraries — which is almost never the bus.
“Do I need to book in advance?” collapses two different decisions into one, and the answers are opposite.
Buying the pass does not need to be early for availability reasons. A BazBus pass is not a dated ticket. Under our terms and conditions, travel using a pass must commence within twelve months of the date of purchase, so buying early costs you nothing in flexibility. Buy early for price and peace of mind, not because seats will run out.
Reserving each leg does need advance notice, and this is where people get caught. Travel reservations are required on every BazBus service, and our terms ask for them at least three days before departure to ensure a seat on your desired bus. You cannot stand outside a hostel and flag down a passing bus, because the driver’s route that morning is built entirely around confirmed pickups.
The mental model that works: the pass is a season ticket, and each leg is a restaurant booking.
There are two families of pass, and they behave differently.
Hop-on hop-off passes run in one direction with no time limit once travel has begun. The Cape Town to Port Elizabeth and Port Elizabeth to Cape Town passes both start from $119 and cover 14 stops.
Travel passes are time-limited but direction-free: an 8 Day Travel Pass at $139, a 14 Day Travel Pass at $169, and a 21 Day Travel Pass at $199, with the same three durations available starting from Port Elizabeth.
Here is the timing guidance we would actually give a friend:
| When you’re travelling | Buy the pass | Why |
|---|---|---|
| December to early January | 2 to 3 months ahead | Peak domestic and international season; accommodation is the constraint, not the bus |
| October to February (rest) | 4 to 6 weeks ahead | Daily departures, but busy hostels and higher room rates |
| March to September | 2 to 4 weeks ahead | Reduced departure days matter more than seat availability |
| Already in South Africa | Same week is fine | You will receive confirmation within 2 hours; just leave 3 days before your first leg |
Once you book, you receive a confirmation email within two hours containing a unique reservation code. That code is what unlocks the Hop Login system where you manage every leg from your phone. If it has not arrived, check your spam folder before contacting us — that is where it is roughly nine times out of ten.
This is the part that determines whether your trip runs smoothly.
When you book, your itinerary is automatically pre-programmed to the minimum recommended schedule for your pass. If you never touch it again, you will simply travel on that schedule. Most people do touch it, constantly, because that is the point of the product.
The deadlines that matter:
If you are not sure of your accommodation when you buy, select DECIDE LATER at the pickup stage and confirm it later, ideally three days before departure. Booking inside three days is fine; the twelve-hour rule is the one that is not negotiable.
There is no charge for changing or cancelling a leg within the notice periods, and no penalty for deciding at 9pm that you are staying in Knysna another three nights. That flexibility is the reason our passengers tell us the pass feels different from a ticket.
“Baz bus made my South Africa experience as easy as possible. My plans changed a lot and it was easy to just adjust my itinerary online on the fly. It takes away the hassle of getting to and from bus stations and the chaos of transportation as a whole. Definitely worth the premium.” — Josh M., Chicago, USA
Departure frequency is not the same all year, and this single fact causes more itinerary problems than everything else on this page combined.
In winter, the next bus is sometimes 48 hours away rather than 24. That is entirely manageable if you know about it. It is a serious problem if you assumed daily departures and booked a non-refundable flight from Port Elizabeth for the following afternoon. Build one flexible day into any itinerary between March and September.
Buses also do not operate on any route between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth on 24 December, 25 December, 31 December and 1 January. Travel over the Christmas and New Year period is still possible around those four dates, but they are firm closures, and combining them with the busiest accommodation fortnight of the year is why we suggest booking that window two to three months out or travelling either side of it.
We would rather tell you this in advance than have you discover it on the morning.
If you are booked on a leg and you miss it, or cancel with less than twelve hours’ notice, we reserve the right to charge a fee to reserve your seat on a following bus. That fee will be no more than $50. Separately, failing to show for a booked and confirmed departure can render a travel pass invalid until a $50 reinstatement fee is paid.
In practice, contact the office and we will put you on the next available departure. Because the pass covers travel rather than a specific seat on a specific day, missing a bus in summer costs you a day rather than money in most cases. In the March to September low season it can cost you two days, because departures are not daily — which is the main practical reason to set an alarm in winter.
It is almost never the bus. It is the bed.
Accommodation is not included in a BazBus pass. We have partner agreements with more than 200 hotels and hostels along the route offering discounted rates to our passengers, and you can book a shared dorm room directly with your driver on board. But a private room in Knysna over New Year is a different proposition, and advance booking is strongly recommended for anything other than a dorm bed.
The seasonal pattern is consistent across thirty years of running this route: December and early January fill first and fill hardest, February and Easter are busy, and the March to September shoulder is comfortable almost everywhere. If you are travelling in the peak window, book beds before you finalise bus legs — it is far easier to move a bus reservation than to find a room in Plettenberg Bay on 27 December.
Our Garden Route hostel guide covers town-by-town suggestions and how many nights each stop genuinely warrants.
If your plans collapse entirely rather than shift, this is the ladder:
| Notice given | Regular ticket | VIP ticket |
|---|---|---|
| Any time once booked | Minimum 20% of ticket price | Free until 24 hours before |
| Within 7 days of departure | 40% of ticket price | Free until 24 hours before |
| Within 3 days of departure | 60% of ticket price | Free until 24 hours before |
| Within 24 hours, no-show, or after departure | 100% of ticket price | 100% of ticket price |
Two things worth knowing alongside that. Cancellation and change requests must come by email from the cardholder to our team — for legal reasons a phone call cannot be accepted as a valid cancellation. And downgrading a pass before your trip starts costs nothing, whereas downgrading during your trip carries no refund, because seats on later buses have already been reserved for you.
Once your trip has started, you can put any leg on hold or move its departure date through the system, which is the flexibility that matters most when you wake up ill in Mossel Bay.
Can I book a BazBus pass after I arrive in South Africa?
Yes, and plenty of people do. Passes are sold online with confirmation arriving by email within two hours, and you can also buy in person at our Cape Town office. The only thing to build in is the reservation lead time for your first leg: our terms ask for three days’ notice to guarantee a seat on a specific bus, and we need your pickup address at least twelve hours before departure. Arriving on a Monday and hoping to leave Cape Town on Tuesday morning sometimes works in low season and is a gamble in December.
How far in advance do I need to book each leg once I’m travelling?
Three days is the notice our terms specify to guarantee a seat, and it is the number to work to in the October to February peak. Outside peak season there is usually room at shorter notice, but the twelve-hour rule for confirming your pickup address never moves, because the driver’s collection round for that morning is built from confirmed addresses the evening before. The habit that works is booking each onward leg the moment you decide how long you are staying, rather than the night before you want to leave.
Is it cheaper to book early?
Our published pass prices are currently discounted from their standard rates — the 8 Day Travel Pass shows $139 against a $219 standard price, for instance — and those promotional rates are not guaranteed to run indefinitely. Beyond that, early booking does not unlock a separate early-bird tier. The stronger financial argument for booking early is indirect: it locks in the current price, gives you twelve months to start travelling, and lets you book accommodation before the December rooms disappear. If you are a group of three or more, ask about the group discount when you book rather than after.
What if I want to change my whole itinerary once I’m in the country?
That is the normal case rather than the exception, and the system is built for it. Your reservation code gives you access to Hop Login where you can move dates, change pickup locations and put legs on hold yourself, or you can message our office and we will handle it. There is no fee for changing a leg within the notice periods. The two things you cannot do are change a group booking without it applying to everyone on that booking, and change direction on a one-way hop-on hop-off pass — if there is any chance you will want to backtrack, buy a travel pass instead.
Do I need to book anything for the December and January period specifically?
Yes, and earlier than you would elsewhere. Buses do not run between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth on 24, 25 and 31 December or 1 January, so those four dates need planning around. More importantly, this is the peak of both the international and domestic South African holiday season, and Garden Route accommodation books out well in advance. We would suggest securing beds two to three months ahead for that fortnight, then arranging bus legs around them.
Two of our own published sources give different change-notice windows — our terms and conditions specify 48 hours while our booking system and FAQ describe 12 hours — so plan to the stricter figure and confirm the current rule with our team before relying on a late change; the same applies to fees, since the amounts quoted here are the published maximums rather than what is charged in every case. Seasonal departure days, prices and the promotional discounts referenced above are accurate at the time of writing and change with the March and October schedule shifts, so check the relevant pass page before booking flights or non-refundable activities around a specific departure.
