Does a Baz Bus Ticket Include Accommodation? How It Really Works (2026)

Updated Date:

Author: BazBus Editorial Team

Quick Summary: No — a BazBus Garden Route pass covers transport, not beds. What it does include is access to discounted rates at more than 200 partner hotels and hostels along the route, the ability to book a shared dorm directly with your driver on board, and door-to-door pickup from whichever property you choose. Our Kruger safari packages are the exception and do include accommodation. This guide explains exactly where the line sits, why we drew it there, and how to plan your nights around a pass.

The Direct Answer

A hop-on hop-off pass or a travel pass buys you movement. It does not buy you a bed.

We are blunt about this because the alternative — vague language about “accommodation options included” — leads to someone standing in Sedgefield at 4pm with nowhere booked. Our own FAQ answers the question in one word: no. What follows the no is the part that actually matters.

There are three exceptions, all of which are separate products rather than passes:

  • Kruger safari packages include accommodation as standard
  • Multi-day tours that involve an overnight, such as our 2 Day Combo Tour with a night in Stellenbosch, or the Addo Elephant Park 2 Day Tour, include the night in the package
  • Day trips do not include accommodation, but they also do not need to, because you sleep where you already are

Everything else in this article concerns Garden Route passes.

What You Get Instead: The Partner Network

Thirty years on one corridor produces relationships that a booking site cannot replicate. We hold partner agreements with more than 200 hotels and hostels along the route, and those agreements exist for one purpose: to get our passengers rates better than the public ones.

This is a real inclusion rather than a marketing line, but it is a discount, not free accommodation, and the size of the saving varies by property, room type and season. Over a two-week itinerary it offsets a meaningful slice of the pass price. It does not offset the whole of it, and we would not claim otherwise.

The less obvious value is curation. The stops on this network exist because thirty years of running it told us which towns are worth getting off in, and the partner list works the same way. When a hostel drops off it, that is usually informative.

Booking with your driver, on the bus

The mechanic that surprises people most: if you are happy with a shared dorm room, you can book it directly with your driver while you are on board.

This is not a fallback for the disorganised. It is genuinely how a lot of the route gets travelled. You wake up in Knysna, decide over breakfast that Storms River sounds better than Plettenberg Bay, get on the bus, and have a bed sorted before Bloukrans. Drivers do this constantly, alongside booking activities, and they do it without a commercial angle — we take no commission from restaurants and our drivers’ recommendations are their own.

“Bazbus is a great way to explore South Africa. You can plan a trip quickly with the website, which was an excellent option for us since we did not have much time to plan a trip and had a tight schedule. Everything is well organized. Once they pick you up from a hotel, then you are in good hands. The drivers helped people to book accommodations and tours while in the bus, explained details and answered questions.” — Sarah W, England

When to book ahead instead

Two situations where the on-the-bus approach stops working:

Private rooms. Advance booking is recommended for anything other than a dorm bed. Partner properties along the Garden Route hold far more dorm capacity than private rooms, and the private rooms go first.

Peak season. October to February is the busiest period, with the Christmas to New Year fortnight being the tightest window of the year. International visitors and South African holidaymakers both contribute to strong demand for accommodation along these beaches. During this period, book your accommodation first and arrange your bus legs around it. It is far easier to change a bus reservation than to find a room in Plettenberg Bay on 27 December.

One caveat from our terms and conditions worth knowing: we hold preferred agreements with accommodation providers but cannot always guarantee your first choice, and advertised accommodation partners are not guaranteed. We do our best to get you where you want to sleep. We do not control their availability.

Can I Stay Somewhere That Isn’t a Partner?

Yes. Nothing about a pass obliges you to use partner properties, and plenty of passengers mix partner hostels with guesthouses, Airbnbs and friends’ spare rooms.

The consideration is logistical rather than contractual. Door-to-door collection works at properties on our route, which covers the partner network and most established accommodation in the towns we serve. For anything else — a private apartment, a rural farmstay off the N2, an Airbnb — you will need to meet the bus at a confirmed point instead. In Cape Town, Airbnb guests meet us at our offices.

The practical rule is simple: tell us when you book the leg, not on the morning. We need your pickup details at least twelve hours before departure, because the driver’s collection round that morning is built entirely from confirmed addresses. Discovering at 6:15am that a passenger is at an unlisted address twenty minutes off route is the one avoidable way to derail a departure.

Why We Don’t Just Bundle It

The obvious commercial move would be to sell a package with beds included. We have deliberately not done that, and the reasoning is worth explaining because it is the same reasoning behind the whole product.

The moment accommodation is bundled, your itinerary is fixed. Fixed nights per town, fixed properties, fixed dates. That is a guided tour, and guided tours are a perfectly good product for people who want every decision made in advance — but it is the opposite of what this network is for. The value of a hop-on hop-off pass is that you can decide at 9pm that Knysna deserves three more nights, and act on it before you finish dinner.

Bundling would also make us responsible for choices we cannot make well on your behalf. A 22-year-old solo traveller and a couple in their sixties want different rooms in the same town, and neither wants ours picked for them.

The compromise we settled on — discounted rates, driver bookings on board, complete freedom to ignore all of it — keeps the flexibility while removing most of the friction.

The Kruger Exception, Explained

Because it generates so much confusion, it is worth spelling out. Our Kruger National Park safari packages are a different product with a different inclusion list, and accommodation is very much part of it.

Depending on which package you choose you sleep in a bush tent beside the park, a chalet at a game lodge, or an elevated treehouse. All packages include guided Big Five game drives, a bush braai under the stars and a visit to Blyde River Canyon. Pricing runs from $574 per person for the 3-day bush tent option, through $859 for the 4-day game lodge and chalet, to $1,034 for the 5-day treehouse package, and every package carries a $50 discount for BazBus passengers using code BBVSOFF50.

Kruger sits in Mpumalanga rather than on the Garden Route, so it is booked as a standalone package rather than reached by hop-on hop-off bus. Plenty of passengers do both trips on the same holiday; they simply are not connected by one continuous bus journey.

How Many Nights Each Stop Deserves

The accommodation question quickly becomes an itinerary question, and the honest answer varies more than most route guides admit. Knysna and Plettenberg Bay reward three or four nights; Sedgefield and Wilderness are often perfect at two; Storms River depends entirely on whether you are doing Tsitsikamma properly.

A rough planning frame that holds up:

  1. 8-day travel pass: expect to move every other day, with two or three towns getting a second night.
  2. 14-day travel pass: comfortable. Three or four towns get proper time, and you can absorb one weather day.
  3. 21-day travel pass: the difference between fourteen and twenty-one days on this route is larger than it sounds. Twenty-one means occasionally waking up somewhere and deciding not to leave.
  4. One-way hop-on hop-off pass: no daily limit at all, so plan by budget rather than by clock.

FAQ

So what exactly do I get if accommodation isn’t included?

You get transport across the network with unlimited stops within your pass conditions, door-to-door pickup and drop-off at every stop, a local South African driver providing commentary and destination advice, road insurance and fuel, all local taxes and service charges, discounted rates at more than 200 partner properties, a 24-hour local support team, and a login code that lets you change dates and buses yourself. What is not included is accommodation, meals, activities and personal travel insurance. It is a transport product with the logistics stripped out, not a holiday package.

Can I really book a hostel from the bus?

Yes, for shared dorm rooms, and drivers do it every day. Tell your driver which town you are getting off at and what you are after, and they will sort it during the journey using the partner network. It works because our drivers know these properties personally rather than from a website — which is also why they will occasionally steer you away from somewhere. For private rooms, or for travel between October and February, book ahead instead; dorm availability is far more elastic than private-room availability.

How much is the partner discount actually worth?

It varies by property, room type and season, so we are not going to quote a single percentage that would be wrong most of the time. What we can say is that the rates are negotiated to beat public booking-site prices for BazBus passengers, and that across a two-week itinerary the cumulative saving is a meaningful fraction of the pass price rather than a token gesture. The practical way to check is to compare the partner rate you are quoted against the public rate for the same room and dates. If the partner rate is not better, tell us, because that is useful information for us too.

What if I want to stay in an Airbnb or somewhere that isn’t a partner?

Entirely fine, and common. The only thing that changes is the pickup. Door-to-door collection works at properties on our route; for an Airbnb, private apartment or somewhere off the corridor, you will meet the bus at a confirmed point instead, and in Cape Town that means our offices. Tell us when you book the leg rather than on the morning, because we need pickup details at least twelve hours before departure so the driver can build the collection round. Handled in advance it is a non-issue; handled at 6:15am it is a missed bus.

Does the Kruger safari include accommodation?

Yes, and this is the main exception to everything above. Kruger packages are sold as complete experiences that include your nights in the bush — a bush tent, a game lodge chalet or a treehouse depending on the package — along with guided game drives, a bush braai and a Blyde River Canyon visit. Prices start at $574 per person for the 3-day bush tent option, and BazBus passengers get $50 off any Kruger safari with code BBVSOFF50. Kruger is not connected to the Garden Route network by bus, so it is booked separately, but a great many of our passengers do both on one trip.

Limitations

Partner property lists, negotiated rates and availability change continuously, and our terms are explicit that accommodation partners are not guaranteed and first choices cannot always be secured — so confirm both the current partner rate and door-to-door pickup at the time of booking rather than relying on any published list, including ours. Pricing for Kruger packages and the value of accommodation discounts are accurate at the time of writing and vary by season and room type; for peak-season travel between December and early January, verify availability directly with properties well in advance, since neither a pass nor a partner agreement creates a room where there is not one.
