Quick Summary: Most people comparing transport on the Garden Route look at price and journey time. The feature that actually changes the trip is less visible: BazBus collects you from your accommodation and drops you at your next one, at every single stop on the route. Across a full Cape Town to Port Elizabeth journey that removes roughly ten taxi journeys and every bus terminal. This article explains exactly how collections work, how to set them up, and the handful of things that go wrong when travelers do not.
It means what it sounds like, and it applies at every stop rather than only at the ends. You are collected from your hotel or hostel in Cape Town, dropped at the door of your hostel in Hermanus, collected from that door two days later, dropped in Knysna, and so on down the route. You do not go to a depot. You do not find a pickup point. There is no bus station in the itinerary at any point.
The corollary is the part travelers underestimate: across the 14-stop route, this saves approximately ten taxi journeys. On a point-to-point coach you take a taxi to the terminal and a taxi from the terminal at the other end — twice per leg, every leg. Those journeys are the most expensive per kilometre part of the trip and, at night with luggage, the part where independent travelers are most exposed.
There is nothing to print. Your booking confirmation is your ticket.
The bus does not sit at a single point waiting for everyone. It works a circuit around town, collecting passengers from their accommodation one after another, and then leaves. So the published departure time is when the bus leaves the town, not when it reaches you.
If your hostel is early on the circuit, you will be collected well before the departure time on the timetable. In Cape Town, where the westbound service departs at 7:00am, the earliest collections happen in the dark. In Port Elizabeth, where the eastbound service departs at 6:30am, the same applies.
Your exact pickup time is on your booking confirmation and depends on where you are staying. Read it, set two alarms, and be outside with your bag ten minutes early.
Each collection is a link in a chain. Holding five minutes for one passenger pushes every subsequent pickup back, and then the whole day’s arrival times with it — which matters because passengers further down the route have activities booked. This discipline is why we hold a 98.5% on-time arrival rate across trips, in a region where transport frequently runs late. Drivers will try to reach you by phone before moving on, so keep your phone on and audible on a travel morning.
Airbnb pickups are handled case by case. In many towns we can collect you directly; in Cape Town, guests staying in Airbnbs can meet us at our offices instead. Either way, email us before your travel date rather than assuming. This is the single most common cause of a confused collection, and it takes one message to resolve.
Update the address in your login. The driver goes to the address on file, and no amount of good intentions will send them to a hostel the system does not know about. This applies even for a move of two streets — collection circuits are built around specific addresses.
Some partner properties sit a little outside the centre. This is normally fine and factored into the circuit, but if you have booked somewhere unusual it is worth confirming with us in advance that the address is on the route.
Ask the driver. They know these towns extremely well and are often able to help. Drivers routinely assist passengers with accommodation and tour bookings while the bus is moving, which is a good indication of how this works in practice — the service is more flexible in person than any booking form can express.
Collections put a South African local on your doorstep at every stop, and that turns out to matter beyond the logistics. Our drivers know which hostels are good, which streets are fine to walk at night, where to eat once you have hopped off, and what you are looking at through the window. They are, in our experience, the single most commented-on part of the whole service.
“Bazbus is a great way to explore South Africa… Once they pick you up from a hotel, then you are in good hands. The drivers helped people to book accommodations and tours while in the bus, explained details and answered questions.” — Sarah W, England.
“I had the best time with the bazbus! You travel safely. The bus brings you from hostel to hostel. You meet a lot of nice people and you are never alone as a solo traveler.” — Lisavord, Luxemburg.
It is worth being concrete about what door-to-door pickup is an alternative to. Travelling the same corridor by intercity coach means arriving at a main bus station in each city, usually in a central district, and then getting yourself and your luggage to your accommodation. Our own Cape Town travel guide makes the same point about arriving in the city by public bus: keep your eye on your baggage, and expect the transfer from the station to your hotel or hostel to add an extra layer of risk.
That is not a criticism of coach operators, several of which run good services — Intercape, for instance, holds its coaches to a self-imposed 95km/h limit on national roads for safety reasons, which is part of why the Cape Town to Port Elizabeth run takes 12 to 13.5 hours. It is a description of a structural difference. A terminal-licensed service has to use terminals. A door-to-door service does not.

Do you pick up from every accommodation in every town?
We pick up from hotels and hostels across all our destinations, and the partner network along the route is extensive. What we need from you is the address, entered in your Hop Login before your travel date, so the driver can build it into the collection circuit. If you are staying somewhere unusual — an Airbnb, a property outside town, a private rental — email us in advance to confirm. In Cape Town, Airbnb guests can meet us at our offices if a direct collection is not possible.
How early will I be picked up?
It depends entirely on where your accommodation sits on the collection circuit, which is why the time is printed on your booking confirmation rather than being a single published figure. With a 7:00am westbound departure from Cape Town and a 6:30am eastbound departure from Port Elizabeth, the earliest collections are genuinely early. Treat the confirmation time as the real one, be outside ten minutes before it, and you will never have a problem.
What if I am not ready when the bus arrives?
The driver will try to reach you by phone, but cannot wait long, because every collection after yours — and every arrival time down the route — depends on the circuit keeping to time. If you do miss the bus, message us straight away on WhatsApp or contact our 24-hour customer service team, and move your travel date in your login. Between October and February the next bus is 24 hours away; between March and September it may be two days, which is why telling us early matters more in winter.
Does door-to-door pickup cost extra?
No. Hotel and hostel pickup and drop-off at every stop is included in the pass, along with all local taxes, fees and service charges — the price you see when booking is the price you pay. It is not an add-on or a premium tier. The saving is real in the other direction: removing around ten taxi journeys across the route is a meaningful line in a Garden Route budget, particularly for solo travelers who have nobody to split fares with.
Can I be dropped somewhere other than a hostel — a friend’s house, or an activity?
Ask the driver, and ask early rather than as you are pulling into town. Drivers know these towns thoroughly and are often able to accommodate reasonable requests, and there are published instances of drivers dropping passengers somewhere more convenient at the end of a day. It is a courtesy rather than an entitlement, and it depends on the route the bus is taking out of town and the passengers still on board.
Pickup availability depends on your accommodation’s address and its position on the collection circuit, so confirm unusual locations — Airbnbs, properties outside town centres, private rentals — with our customer service team before your travel date rather than on the morning. Pickup times are scheduled rather than guaranteed and can shift with traffic and weather, particularly coastal fog around George and Mossel Bay. The taxi-journey saving quoted is an approximate figure for the full 14-stop route and will be lower for travelers using only part of it.
