Quick Summary: A BazBus pass covers transport across the network, door-to-door pickup and drop-off at your accommodation, a local South African driver-guide, road insurance and fuel, all local taxes and service charges, discounted rates at more than 200 partner properties, a 24-hour local support team, and free itinerary changes through your own login. It does not cover accommodation, meals, activities or personal travel insurance. This guide goes through each line individually, explains what it is actually worth, and is equally specific about what is not in the price.
You are buying movement and the removal of logistics — not a holiday package.
That distinction is the source of almost every misunderstanding we deal with. People arrive expecting either less than the pass includes (they are surprised the driver gives running commentary and destination advice) or considerably more (they expected a bed at the other end). The line sits in a specific and slightly unusual place, so here is exactly where.
A hop-on hop-off pass covers 14 stops in one direction with no time limit. A travel pass covers unlimited travel in any direction — backwards and forwards as often as you like — within 8, 14 or 21 days. Either way, you choose where to get off, how long to stay, and what to do there. Nobody hands you an itinerary.
The stops themselves are part of the product rather than incidental geography. Thirty years of running this corridor is why the schedule includes Sedgefield and Wilderness and Storms River, and not just the four towns with the biggest marketing budgets. A full-size intercity coach cannot physically service most of them.
The bus collects you from the door of the hostel, guesthouse or hotel you are sleeping in, and delivers you to the door of the next one. Not to a terminal, not to a corner, not to a meeting point near a taxi rank. If you are in an Airbnb or private apartment, you meet us at our offices instead, confirmed when you book.
Priced honestly, this is the single largest hidden value in the pass. Across a full Garden Route itinerary it removes something in the region of ten separate terminal-to-accommodation transfers. That is roughly ten taxi fares you do not pay, and — more to the point for most first-time visitors — ten occasions you do not spend standing outside an unfamiliar bus station with all your luggage.
This is the line item that does not appear on any invoice and is the one passengers write about most.
Every driver is South African and licensed by the South African government to operate our buses. The commentary is not an upsell: what that mountain is called, why that town exists, what life here was and is really like, where to eat when you get off, which street is fine to walk after dark and which is not. Our drivers get named personally in TripAdvisor reviews with a frequency you will not find on any intercity coach service.
They will also help you book accommodation and activities from the bus, and they do it without a commercial angle. We do not earn commission from restaurants — we simply ask them to give our passengers discounts as an added benefit. That means the recommendation you get is the driver’s actual opinion.
“The drivers helped people to book accommodations and tours while in the bus, explained details and answered questions.” — Sarah W, England
Both are included in your fare, and both are separate line items the moment you rent a car instead. Across a 750km route with South African fuel prices and a rental insurance excess, this is not a trivial inclusion. It is also worth being precise about what it is not — see the exclusions below.
The price you see is the price you pay. There is no booking fee added at checkout, no fuel surcharge, no service charge appended at the end. We are deliberate about this because the backpacker transport market has a long history of headline fares that grow by 20% at the payment screen.
We have partner agreements with more than 200 hotels and hostels along the network, offering rates to BazBus passengers that are typically better than public booking sites. For a shared dorm room you can book directly with your driver on board; for a private room, book ahead.
Over a two-week trip this genuinely offsets a meaningful slice of the pass price, though the exact saving depends on where you stay and when. It is a real inclusion rather than a marketing one, but it is a discount, not free accommodation.
You get a unique reservation code that gives you access to the Hop Login system, where you change dates, move buses, update pickup addresses and put legs on hold — yourself, from your phone, without asking permission. There is no fee for changing a leg within the notice periods.
The practical effect is that your itinerary is a draft rather than a commitment. Decide at 9pm that Knysna deserves three more nights and you can act on it before you finish dinner.
Reachable by phone and email around the clock, based in South Africa, on the same time zone as the bus you are trying to catch. WhatsApp works too, and for most passengers it is the fastest route to a changed booking.
Every bus carries 16 foam-padded seats, temperature-controlled air, USB ports at every seat, high-specification brakes and suspension, and a GPS system monitoring position, route adherence and speed 24 hours a day. Seatbelts are fitted to every seat and mandatory on every leg. Network-wide we run a 98.5% on-time arrival rate.
We would rather over-communicate this than have you find out in Mossel Bay.
The line moves depending on what you have bought, so do not assume the Garden Route rules apply everywhere.
Day trips from Cape Town and Port Elizabeth depart every day and include hotel or hostel pickup and drop-off as standard. Several include food and entrance elements — the Cape Peninsula tour, for example, includes a morning snack and a buffet lunch, which is why passengers routinely note that nobody needed to buy lunch at the lighthouse. Check the individual tour page for what each one covers.
Kruger safari packages are the most inclusive thing we sell, and they do include accommodation. Depending on the package you sleep in a bush tent, a game lodge chalet or an elevated treehouse, with guided Big Five game drives, a bush braai and a visit to Blyde River Canyon built in. The 3-day bush tent package starts at $574 per person, the 4-day game lodge and chalet option at $859, and the 5-day treehouse option at $1,034. All Kruger safaris carry a $50 discount for BazBus passengers with code BBVSOFF50.
This is the comparison that makes the pass legible. It is our own framing, so treat it as informed rather than neutral, but the line items are real.
| Included on a BazBus pass | Equivalent when self-driving |
|---|---|
| Fuel across the route | Your cost, roughly 750km end to end |
| Road insurance | Rental insurance plus excess |
| Door-to-door transport | Secure parking to find and pay for in every town |
| Local driver knowledge | A guidebook and a phone signal |
| Accommodation discounts | Public rates |
| All taxes and service charges | One-way drop-off fees, tolls, admin fees |
| A designated driver, permanently | Someone stays sober in Stellenbosch |
| No night navigation | Unfamiliar roads, on the left, after dark |
Read that table as a list of costs rather than a verdict. A rental car moves most of those lines from the fare into your own budget, and the total depends heavily on party size: for solo travellers the full sum rarely lands below a pass once fuel, insurance, tolls, parking and one-way drop-off fees are counted, while a group splitting a single vehicle narrows the gap. Run the numbers for your own route and party size rather than trusting anyone’s headline comparison. And there is a category of value that does not appear in any spreadsheet: sixteen seats is small enough that people talk, and it is extremely common for someone who boarded alone in Cape Town to still be travelling with three others by Jeffreys Bay.
Is accommodation included in my BazBus ticket?
Not on a Garden Route pass. What is included is access to discounted rates at more than 200 partner hotels and hostels along the route, which are generally better than the public rates on booking sites. If you are happy with a shared dorm room you can book it directly with your driver on board, which is genuinely convenient when you decide mid-morning that you are getting off at Sedgefield after all. Private rooms should be booked in advance, particularly between October and February. Our Kruger safari packages are the exception and do include accommodation.
Are activities like the Bloukrans bungee jump included?
No, activities are separate. You can add them at step four of the booking process, book them through your driver during the trip, or arrange them yourself at the destination. We think the add-on route is usually easiest for the big ones — the world’s highest commercial bungee jump at 216m tends to book out, and the same is true of shark cage diving in Hermanus during whale season. Our drivers can tell you which operators they would use themselves, and because we take no commission from those recommendations, the advice is straightforward.
Does the ticket include insurance?
It includes road insurance on the vehicle, which is a real saving against renting a car where insurance and excess are separate costs. It does not include personal travel insurance, and our terms and conditions say so explicitly. We recommend every passenger take out their own policy covering sickness, injury and loss of property before travelling, and this is not a formality — our liability for baggage loss or damage is limited, and valuables, electronics, documents, medication and money should stay with you rather than in a bag under the bus.
Is there a booking fee or anything added at checkout?
No. All local taxes, fees and service charges are in the advertised price, and the figure you see when you choose a pass is the figure you pay. We are specific about this because inflated checkout totals are common in backpacker transport, and it is one of the few areas where a straightforward promise is possible. Payment is processed through Stripe with Visa, Mastercard and American Express accepted.
What’s included in a day trip versus a hop-on hop-off pass?
Day trips are more inclusive because they are complete experiences rather than transport. Every day trip from Cape Town or Port Elizabeth includes hotel or hostel pickup and drop-off, and many include meals, entrance fees or activity elements — the specific list is on each tour page. A hop-on hop-off pass is deliberately the opposite: it covers movement, door-to-door service, your driver and the support infrastructure, and it leaves accommodation, food and activities entirely to you. That is the trade you are making, and for most independent travellers it is the right one.
Inclusions vary between pass types, day trips and safari packages, so treat this article as an overview and confirm the specific list on the individual pass or tour page before booking — particularly for activities and meals, which differ tour by tour. Prices, discount codes and partner counts quoted here are accurate at the time of writing and change without notice under our terms; if a specific inclusion is decisive for your decision, message our team to confirm it in writing rather than relying on any published summary, including this one.
